2008 NEW ENGLAND GRAND PRIX SERIES SET

The 2008 USATF-NE Grand Prix series will have five new events including several past championship races as the seven Road Race Championships composing the series for next year were selected Monday evening by close to 100 USATF-NE member voters at Brandeis University.

12 races submitted bids for next year's series, with two selections came down to a margin of 4 or fewer votes and three races were uncontested. The series breaks down to one race in any month, and covers three of the association's 4 states (no bids from Vermont races). That leaves plenty of time for track, mountains, and cross country. There were no runaway winners and the marathon was uncontested.

The remaining 2008 schedule:

  • Aug 9 - Bridge of Flowers 10K, Shelburne Falls MA
  • Sept 6 - Ollie 5 Mile, South Boston MA
  • Oct 19 - Bay State Marathon, Lowell MA

Congratulations to those races, and thanks to those others who submitted bids: Westford 5K, Marine Corps 10K, NE XC Championships, Seagull 6, and the Breakers Marathon.

Final results of 2007 are posted on the GP Page

Bobby Doyle Summer Classic

Dear Runners and Friends of the Running Community,

You may recall that in December of 2007, Rhode Island suffered a terrible loss in the community with the passing of Bobby Doyle. Bobby Doyle was one of Rhode Island and New England's "elite" marathoners in the late 1970's, and early 1980's.

Bobby's legacy is truly most notable in his community outreach. He would always appear at road races to promote the sport of running, and spent many hours volunteering for groups like the Special Olympics and The Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. Bobby believed that giving back to the running community was as important as the raced he actually ran.

In order to keep Bobby's legacy of community involvement alive, the family and friends of Bobby have created the Bobby Doyle Summer Classic 5-Mile Road Race. The inaugural date for this race in Saturday, August 16th, 2008 and will kick off at the Narragansett Pier Middle School at 5 p.m. in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The website for the race is http://www.bobbydoylesummerclassic.org

I hope you will join us in beautiful Narragansett to commemorate the life of this remarkable man and athlete. Attached is a press release with all of the details for the event. Please share within your running community, and feel free to email me with any questions at majaprov@yahoo.com.

Use "Bobby Doyle" in the subject line. If you have questions that you need me to answer via phone, please feel free to call me during the day at (401) 793 2120.

Sincerely,

Monica Anderson

Bobby Doyle Road Race Committee Member
